HEALTH JOURNEY: When health knocks on the door

When health knocks on the door:

Chronicle of the impact of an IKMA medical journey in Coro

From the early hours, volunteers in dresses of vibrant colors, identifying themselves as part of the organizing team of IKMA, were finalizing the details in the facilities of a public high school located in the Los Perozos de Coro sector, Falcon state, epicenter of the activity. Student tables became improvised doctors' offices; signs guided the flow of people and boxes full of medical supplies awaited their moment. The air was filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, courtesy of a solidarity volunteer.

Little by little, the inhabitants of the Los Perozos sector and surrounding communities began to congregate. Faces tanned by the sun and daily worries, mothers with children in their arms, young people and the elderly, all united by the same need: to access quality medical care, which sometimes seems so distant in the day to day.

The day began with a few words of welcome from the Apostle for Medicine, the specialist in hand surgery, Francisco Hernández, who highlighted the spirit of collaboration and the joint effort that made this meeting with the associated doctors in Venezuela and the congregation Ciudad de las Águilas, located in Coro. Spontaneous applause echoed under the school's roof, a gesture of thanks that filled the atmosphere with warmth.

The different points of attention began to be activated simultaneously. At one extreme, the general medicine consultation received the first patients, who recounted their ailments with the confidence of being heard. Next door, the pediatrics' team dedicated their attention to the little ones, with games and smiles that relieved any fears. The gynecology consultation, a crucial space for women's health, offered check-ups and guidance with the necessary discretion and professionalism.

Dentistry also had its space, with oral check-ups and talks on hygiene, seeking to promote healthy smiles. There was also a corner dedicated to mental health, with professionals providing active listening and guidance, recognizing the importance of emotional well being. The community pharmacy, nourished by donations and the efforts of members of the Ciudad de las Águilas church, dispensed free medicines, a relevant relief for many pockets.

A total of 26 medical specialists, along with a team of nurses and medical students, 15 experts in the area of barbering and hairdressing, as well as a large group of people who prepared a pot of wood-fired soup for the inhabitants of the sector and the volunteers, participated. While the wait to go to the consultations passed, reenactors performed dynamics and plays for the children and young people of the community.

Lenny Arévalo, a member of the Perozos community and the health committee, said: "This day has been the best, we are grateful and surprised because in addition to excellent medical care, there is a lot of love, and we want you to return". While Iliannys Sánchez, one of the beneficiaries, said she was happy because she received care and the treatment indicated for her father. The last patients received their care, and volunteers began to collect and organize. There was a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in the air. More than 500 people, a significant figure. But beyond the numbers, what really transcended was the feeling of having brought a ray of hope to a community that needed it the most and where doctors and health professionals decided to manifest God's love through science.
